Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) joined in the chorus of criticism raining down on Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos after her embarrassing appearance on “60 Minutes” last night.
He took to Twitter and his jab was devastating.
Betsy DeVos wasn't asked what is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow. She was asked basic questions about education and had trouble answering them.
Also, saying that we shouldn't invest in school buildings is stupid. Dilapidated & unsafe buildings affect learning. https://t.co/4FQVHYVn73

She performed abysmally during her nomination hearings, failing to even understand the most basic questions about education policy, let alone string together coherent responses to them.
DeVos didn’t do herself any favors by appearing for an interview on “60 Minutes” last night. She appeared unable to answer even the most basic questions about the nation’s schools and the White House’s new plan to prevent gun violence in schools primarily by arming teachers. The performance was so disturbingly bad, even White House officials were worried about it, and that’s saying something. They have front row seats to the worst performance in a public office every single day.
She failed particularly hard when the subject of public schools in her own home state of Michigan came up. DeVos has been an aggressive supporter of school choice, which allows students to leave public schools and use public funding to attend charter schools or religious schools. This has had a deleterious effect on the public school system in Michigan.
“60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl pushed DeVos on this question, specifically what happens to the students who are left behind at public schools.
“In places where there is a lot of choice that’s been introduced, Florida for example, the studies show that where there’s a large number of students that opt to go to a different school or different schools, the traditional public schools actually, the results get better as well,” DeVos said during the interview.
Stahl called her out, asking if that’s the case in Michigan, where DeVos has personally advocated for this. DeVos had to say, “no.” Michigan’s public schools are a disaster.
This morning, DeVos didn’t even know the basic talking points put forth by the White House for a task force on gun control that DeVos herself is heading. Though the White House’s plan does not include raising the minimum age for buying a gun from 18 to 21, DeVos said in an interview today that “everything is on the table.”
