At tonight’s Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, California, host Jimmy Kimmel made it a point that tonight’s show would be upbeat and optimistic. In other words, there wouldn’t be much mention of the current sate of politics in our country.
He did, however, manage to sneak in one or two hilarious exceptions. For example, when Kimmel was introducing the nominees for the Best Documentary category, he took the opportunity to poke fun at the most recent high-profile departure from the White House, Hope Hicks.

“If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that reality can be depressing. But tonight’s nominated documentaries show us that where there is darkness, there is also hope– except at the White House. Hope quit on Wednesday,” Kimmel said to laughter from the crowd.
Per The New York Times, Hicks’ excuse for her sudden departure was:
“She told colleagues that she had accomplished what she felt she could with a job that made her one of the most powerful people in Washington, and that there would never be a perfect moment to leave.”
In reality, her exit came one day after she reportedly spent nine hours testifying in front of the House Intelligence Committee regarding the investigation into Russia’s attempts to influence the outcome of the 2016 election. There, she admitted that she has told “white lies” on behalf of Trump.
There may indeed be no hope at the White House. But there’s definitely no Hope.
