Would Donald Trump stage a terror attack to save the Republicans from a bloodbath in the upcoming midterm elections? That’s the question beginning to form in terrified American’s minds after a report in The Washington Post revealed that the President has privately told friends that the elections don’t have to be a disaster for the GOP and that he referenced the post 9/11 elections as an example.
According to The Post:
“In private conversations, Trump has told advisers that he doesn’t think the 2018 election has to be as bad as others are predicting. He has referenced the 2002 midterms, when George W. Bush and Republicans fared better after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, these people said.”
With generic Democrats outpolling generic Republicans by 11 points in the Real Clear Politics average of seven major polls, Democrats have been hoping that Trump’s massive unpopularity, coupled with the Republican policies delivering massive tax cuts to their oligarch masters while fighting to reduce or eliminate all of the social programs that benefit ordinary Americans, will lead to a return to majority control of both the House and the Senate for the party.
If Democrats can regain the majority in both houses of Congress, then Trump faces a real risk of impeachment with no fawning Republican leadership in place to block the the bills calling for removal of the President as they have to date.
While the prospect of such a massive wave of Democratic victories that they’d win back control of the legislative branch of government was considered unlikely just a few short months ago, with prominent Republicans such as Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA) declining to seek re-election, the political landscape has undergone a terrain-altering earthquake.
With Trump fully cognizant in at least one area, that his base is motivated primarily by fear, it’s not unthinkable that, feeling desperate and cornered, Trump might resort to either staging or allowing a conveniently timed terrorist action to save his party, and, more importantly from his point of view, to save his own butt.
Given Trump’s authoritarian tendencies,, it isn’t difficult to believe he’s capable of such a plan of action. Cornered beast are always the most dangerous.
