Donald Trump has somehow managed to stumble through his first year in office without sparking a new war, this despite his constant provocations of the nuclear-armed North Korea regime.
There is no good solution to the problem posed by Kim Jong-un and his totalitarian slave state, but sending out petty tweets at all hours of the day and night is perhaps the worst available option. With the fate of much of the world on the line what’s required is considered diplomacy and careful strategy, not Trumpian bluster.
As for Trump, the president still maintains unearned and outsized confidence in his own abilities to navigate the treacherous geopolitical quagmire of the Korean peninsula. In a new interview with Reuters, our conman commander-in-chief blamed previous administrations for the crisis.
Trump claimed that Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton are responsible for not finding a permanent end to Kim Jong-un’s nuclear program, before bragging that he alone had the mental prowess to successfully tackle it.
“I guess they all realized they were going to have to leave it to a president that scored the highest on tests,” he told Reuters, an absurd and thoroughly irrelevant reference to the fact that he passed a cognitive test administered by his physician on Friday to combat growing concerns of mental deterioration.
The test was roughly ten minutes long and involved such taxing tasks as correctly telling the difference between a camel and lion, and drawing a picture of a clock.
Apparently being able to solve this…
…means that Trump can solve this…
Furthermore, Trump’s claim that previous presidents presciently knew that he would one day pass a simple mental task and that it, in turn, would somehow make him uniquely qualified to settle a half-century-long issue is completely nonsensical to the point where one can’t help but wonder if a more thorough examination of the president’s cognitive faculties is required.
Trump then went on to make one of his usual warmongering statements, once again raising the specter of a military conflict in Korea that could easily claim as many a million lives. He said he hoped that the crisis could be solved “in a peaceful way, but it’s very possible that it can’t.”
The nonchalant manner in which Trump contemplates armed conflict shows all the ignorance of a man who barely skims intelligence briefings and all the cowardice of a man who sought repeated military deferments due to “bone spurs.” Trump has no idea what he’s doing with North Korea, and if we don’t vote him out of office, we could find ourselves embroiled in an avoidable, disastrous war.
