Somehow, President Trump is still standing despite the constant wave of scandals that has plagued him since inauguration, any one of which would have capsized most presidencies.
Perhaps it’s because one year in, people already expect so little from the conman reality star. Or perhaps it’s because he’s worn down most of the population to the point where they’re too inured to stay outraged over any of his misdeeds long enough for them to stick to him.
With that in mind, it’s little surprise that what should have been a bombshell revelation last week that Trump paid hush money to a pornstar for her to keep quiet about an extramarital affair with him failed to maintain itself very long in the news cycle.
On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s attorney paid Stephanie Clifford, stage name Stormy Daniels $130,000 to remain quiet about their sexual liaisons. Today, it was revealed that the affair went on for nearly a year long, providing further proof that the standard-bearer of the Republican Party, buoyed into office on the back of the Evangelical voting block, is a hypocritical, lying, philanderer.
One can’t help but imagine how the story might have tipped the scale during the 2016 election, back before most people got fully used to how terrible Trump truly is. It’s not unreasonable to think that it may have shaved a nonnegligible number of votes away from him. Now, it’s been revealed that Trump owes Fox News a thank you for the fact that the story didn’t come out sooner.
CNN reports that a Fox News reporter named Diana Falzone filed a story about Trump’s extramarital affair with the adult film star in October of 2016, but Fox spiked the story rather than run it.
“She had the story and Fox killed it,” a source told CNN.
“Like many other outlets, we were working to report the story of Stephanie Clifford’s account in October 2016 about then-Presidential candidate Donald Trump and a possible payment by Trump lawyer Michael Cohen. In doing our due diligence, we were unable to verify all of the facts and publish a story,” said Noah Kotch, who went on to become editor-in-chief and vice president of Fox digital sometime after the story was spiked.
The fact that Kotch wants the public to believe that his network — which ran breathless coverage about the fabricated Uranium One conspiracy as well as immoral and unfounded conspiracy theories about slain DNC staffer Seth Rich — is somehow concerned with “verifying” facts is laughable. Fox News has actively transformed itself into a form of state media, constantly praising President Trump and covering for his constant blunders and scandals.
It now appears that the network refused to cover meaningful stories in 2016 because they had a vested interest in Trump winning the election. The massive damage he has wreaked and will continue to wreak on the country and the world at large must be laid at least partially at Fox’s feet.
