Dems Just Chose The Next Red State Senate Seat They Will Target And Republicans Are Running Scared

- Desember 13, 2017

Emboldened by their hard-fought victory in the Alabama Senate race last night, Democratic strategists are aiming their sights on their next big target. While Roy Moore proved to be a more resilient contender than Democrats expected given the host of negative allegations against him, the charges of his molestation of teenage girls eventually roused enough of the Alabama electorate to either vote against Moore or sit out the contest in what would ordinarily be an easy Republican victory.

Now, the name popping up on most Democratic political consultants’ lips as they search for the next major politician to take on is Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Julian Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Obama, served the Texas senator with a tweeted warning after Doug Jones’ unprecedented win last night.

With Ted Cruz’s popularity ratings dipping below those of even the losing child molester Roy Moore’s favorability polls, Democrats see him as particularly vulnerable to a strong challenger from anywhere to the left of Cruz’s ultra-conservative views.

Beto O’Rourke, the El Paso Congressman who is seen as the leading contender for the Democratic nomination in the next Texas Senate race, immediately sent out a fundraising email upon learning of Jones Alabama triumph.

“If you weren’t sure if our campaign to take on Ted Cruz was possible, you have to know it is now,” the email said. “Next stop, Texas 2018.”

While Jones won his seat in a state in which Trump beat Hillary Clinton by 28 points, the President’s margin of victory in Texas was only 9 points, making it much more fertile ground for planting the seeds of a major electoral upset.

The fact that Cruz took a long, leisurely time before ultimately withdrawing his endorsement of Moore after the molestation allegations surfaced won’t help his campaign much either.

Judging from the twitter feed of Texas Democrats, they are energized and ready for the fight of their lives. Former Bernie Sanders advisor Becky Bond had this to say:

The Nation‘s Joshua Holland felt similarly:

Author Cora Carmack started her advocacy for Beto O’Rourke last night as well:

Meanwhile, Ted Cruz is probably furiously calling his billionaire pals to beg for extra money for his campaign next year. It looks like he’s going to need it.
